Start of School Letter 2019

Dear Parents,

After our lovely Summer break hope you are all well rested and ready for the new academic year. As we start our second week of our new Autumn term, on behalf of my colleagues, I would like to welcome everyone back to school. We have lots of new students and staff and we look forward to getting to know each other over the next few weeks.

Our new junior infants are settling in well and this week we see them in at 9.00am and going home at 12.30pm. We are delighted to see how well the children walked to their lines through the yard yesterday and are equally delighted to see how happy they are to be arriving at school. We also welcome very specially, our Little Acorns who are also settling in very nicely to the new routines of school. Please be aware that week 2 is traditionally a tough week for our little ones (and our big ones!), as they are tired and the realisation has probably just set in that school happens EVERY day…If you are worried or have any questions, please do call to the office to make an appointment to chat with a teacher or Mrs. Barron.

Below are a few points of information which are important for you to know.

Parent Association AGM: WED 25th September CBS Primary, Wexford has a very vibrant Parent’s Association and we would love for at least one representative of each family to attend. There is no pressure to take on the role of an Officer but we would love to hear from any parents who may be available to support the school as a volunteer, as part of a smaller committee for an event or even just to come to meetings to express your opinion. You will find the Agenda attached to this letter.

Anti-Bullying Talk: On the same night as the AGM, Wednesday 25th September, Mrs. Barron will take parents through the Anti-bullying policy, what it means for you and your child and how we deal with instances of bullying in our school. Refreshments will be served. Anti-bullying talk starts at 7pm and AGM starts at 7.30pm.

Insurance forms: Insurance forms have been sent home. If you did not receive one, please contact the office and we will get one to you asap. You have 2 payment options, the €9 options covers your child 24 hours a day for 365 days a year. The €6 option covers you for school Activities ONLY. If you have any questions, please contact the office. We ask that forms be returned by this Friday, 13th September, if you are opting in. We still need the completed form if you have paid online. Thank you.

Aladdin App: if any parent hasn’t yet downloaded the App, and if you need any assistance, please do pop into the office and we will help get you started. It is a fantastic tool where you have access to ALL of your child’s details, can schedule your own parent teacher meetings at a time convenient to you, you can and will receive regular communication about what’s going on in school and the class teacher can also contact you when needed.

Contact Details: We want to be sure we can communicate effectively with our parents so please make sure you have checked your Aladdin App to ensure the contact details for parents and emergency contacts are all up to date. Can ye also please enter your Eircode if you know it. The Department of Education requires them. We are grateful for your assistance with this.

Office: Clara can be reached by phone on: 053 9141324 between the hours of 9.00 and 3.30pm. The school email address is:

Parking: The Board of Management wishes to remind parents that the car park in front of the school is for staff parking only.

Online payments: Thank you all for your payments so far for the various collections. We hope that by putting all payments up in advance is helpful.  For those who do not wish to use online payments, we remind you that all payments should arrive into school in an envelope clearly marked with name and payment details. We will not issue paper receipts as all monies received is clearly visible on the profile page of the child on Aladdin.

Swimming: Swimming lessons continue this year and notes will go to the various classes as the lessons roll out. We start this week with 4th and 5th classes for the next 10 weeks. Cost will be €8 per child per week. Children from 1st upwards are invited to participate.

On wet mornings the infant children should go to their classrooms and all other children, from 1st -6th classes will be supervised in the G.P. room until the school starts at 9.00. Children should enter through the doors beside the G.P. room and are usually shown to their classrooms by helpers from senior classes. There is teacher supervision in the infant classrooms on wet mornings.

On wet afternoons, Jr. and Sr. Infant parents should remain outside the school building (please feel free to wait under the sheltered area at the steps) teachers will escort the children to the collection area at 1.40. Children from 1st -6th will leave the building as normal and should be collected from the school gate as usual at 2.40pm.

Consent forms: we will be trialling Aladdin digital signatures for consent over the next few weeks so please keep an eye on the App.

School Calendar: The calendar has been off-line for the last week as we are updating it. It will be back up and running before the week is out with all relevant dates for you and the children throughout the year.

Child Protection: Here are a few points regarding child protection:

  • The Designated Liaison Person is Vicky Barron, Principal.
  • The Deputy Designated Liaison Person is Eileen Casey, Deputy Principal.
  • Parents wishing to withdraw their child at any time during school hours for part of the school day, e.g. dental appointments, hospital appointments, drama/music exams etc. must inform the appropriate teacher in writing. An adult should collect and deliver the child back in person.
  • It is very important that parents report to the office upon entrance to the school building at any time. Parents must check in at the office at the hatch.
  • The Board of Management kindly asks that all parents use the front door at the office to enter the school building on all occasions. Use of black doors from the yard is for children and staff only. We still wish to maintain our ‘open door’ policy, but from the front door, and with your help and support, we will continue to do so.
  • If you have a question regarding your child’s education, please consult with your child’s teacher in the first instance, via an appointment in the office.

Over this last year, the school has seen many changes and lots of work has gone on both inside and outside the school. However, we are not there yet. We have lots of plans to develop the outside of the school this year to make the play areas more fun and inclusive to all children. We are currently experimenting with yard layouts for the younger children and will take feedback from the children as to how things are working.

I look forward to working with all of the children and you, their parents, over this new academic year. All of the teachers are delighted with their new students and we hope the children have an enjoyable year as they continue on their learning journey with CBS Primary, Wexford.

CBS, we Care about your child, we Believe in your child, we will Support your child to be the best he or she can be.

Vicky Barron.
