Start of School Letter 2018



Dear Parents,

After our lovely Summer I hope you are all well rested and ready for the new academic year. As we start our second week of our new Autumn term, in our new school, and on behalf of my colleagues, I would like to welcome everyone back to school. We have lots of new students and staff and we look forward to getting to know each other over the next few weeks. We will welcome everyone more formally in our Newsletter which will issue in a few weeks’ time.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Mr. Furlong well in his retirement and we are very grateful to him, and indeed to Ger and Mary, for the time and effort put in over the summer to ensure we were in our new refurbished classrooms by the start of school. Thank you very much.

Our new junior infants are settling in well and this week we see them in at 9.10am and going home at 1.50pm. From today onwards, we encourage parents to drop their children and to leave before, or at the latest, when, the children enter the building at 9.10. For the care and protection of our children, the school yard gate will be shut from 9.10. Children entering school after this time should be accompanied by a parent and enter via the main door at the front of the building. Similarly, the gate will open at 1.50 and 2.50 to facilitate collection of children.

Parking: The Board of Management wishes to remind parents that the car park in front of the school is for staff parking only.

Online payments: we are introducing a primary school management system called ‘Aladdin’ to the school. This will facilitate the management of data of pupils in a very safe and efficient manner. With this system also comes the option for parents to make payments to the school online if they wish. We will issue a letter from the company explaining how the system will work for you as parents. The first potential payment will be for swimming.

Payment record sheets: For those who do not wish to use online payments, please fill in the payment record sheet at the front of your child’s homework journal. This will allow you to keep track of your payments also. We remind you that all payments should arrive into school in an envelope clearly marked with name and payment details. Receipts will still issue from the office. Thank you.

Swimming: Swimming lessons continue this year and notes will go to the various classes as the lessons roll out. We start this week with 4th and 5th classes for the next 10 weeks. Cost will be €8 per child per week. Children from 2nd upwards are invited to participate.

On wet mornings the infant children should go to their classrooms and all other children, from 1st -6th classes will be supervised in the G.P. room (the new school hall) until the school starts at 9.10.

On wet afternoons, Jr. and sr. infant parents should remain outside the school building (please feel free to wait under the sheltered area at the steps) teachers will escort the children to the collection area at 1.50. Children from 1st -6th will leave the building as normal and should be collected from the school gate as usual.

Data protection: We are working on our data protection policy and we will email this to parents when it is developed fully.

Here are a few points regarding child protection:

  • ·         The Designated Liaison Person is Vicky Barron, Principal.
  • ·         The Deputy Designated Liaison Person is Eileen Casey, Deputy Principal.
  • ·         Parents wishing to withdraw their child at any time during school hours for part of the school day, e.g. dental appointments, hospital appointments, drama/music exams etc. must inform the appropriate teacher in writing. An adult should collect and deliver the child back in person.
  • ·         It is very important that parents report to the office upon entrance to the school building at any time. Parents must check in at the office at the hatch.
  • ·         The Board of Management kindly asks that all parents use the front door at the office to enter the school building on all occasions. Use of black doors from the yard is for children and staff only. We still wish to maintain our ‘open door’ policy, but from the front door, and with your help and support, we will continue to do so.
  • ·         If you have a question regarding your child’s education, please consult with your child’s teacher in the first instance.

We will be having our Parents Association AGM in the coming weeks and I look forward to meeting everyone and developing a plan for the year ahead. You, our parents, are our partners in education and as Principal, I am very excited about working with you all.
