Quiz Time

January and February are “Quiz Time” each year here in the school as we select pupils to
participate in the ever-popular Credit Union Quiz. This is the 24th year that the quiz has been
held. Approximately 25,000 children will compete in Credit Union quizzes around the
country with the top fifty teams of four in the Under–11 and Under-13 categories making it to
the All Ireland Final which will take place in Dublin on 12th April.

All pupils in our 4th, 5th and 6th classes had the opportunity to participate in a quiz which was
conducted by the class teachers during school time. The top scorers were invited to some
after-school quiz sessions where a further 200 questions were asked, following which the
teams were selected. The team members were involved in practice sessions for the past
couple of weeks and they participated in the local Credit Union Quiz on Monday 2nd
February in the Ferrycarrig Hotel.

Under-13 – Team 1 – Adam Connolly, Eamonn O’Leary, Hugo Lynn, Hugh Turner

Under-13 – Team 2 – Julius McMahon, Cathal Dowd, Daniel Bent, Colm Furlong

Under-11 – Team 1 – Darby Purcell, Jack Corcoran, Cormac Doyle, Ben English

Under-11 – Team 2 – Jake Gilshinan, Noah O’Leary Dalton, Callum Hayes, Karthik Maolhav

Congratulations to the members of Team 1 in the Under-13 category on their win on Monday.
They answered 67 questions out of 72 and were joint first with Barntown. In the tiebreak they
answered all three questions correctly to claim victory. How would you have done?

1. In “The Wizard of Oz” what was Dorothy’s surname?

2. How many red balls are there in a game of snooker?

3. What is the fifth letter in the Greek Alphabet?

School Choir

Auditions were held last month for pupils from 4th and 5th classes to become members of the
choir. There was a great attendance at the auditions and 32 children were selected to be part
of the choir. They have been busy rehearsing with the choir director, Donagh Wylde.

School Building Project

The School Building Project is moving along with the final date to receive tenders being 27th
School Closure

The school will be closed for a full week in February for mid-term break, Monday 16th to
Friday 20th.

Primary On-line Database (POD)

Information about the Department of Education’s database was distributed last week, along
with forms for completion. All forms need to be returned and I ask that this would be done as
soon as possible.

We will be supporting the CBS Mission Work in Zambia again this year through the sale of
Shamrock. The pupils will receive order cards this week and hopefully you will be in a
position to purchase shamrock for wearing on St Patrick’s Day. Last year there was also the
option of purchasing a small skillet pot containing shamrock. These proved to be very
popular and we will have them available again this year.

RTE Quiz Programme and 4th Class

Two of our 4th Class pupils, Darby Purcell and Cormac Doyle along with teachers Mairead
Parle and Meabh Shannon travelled to RTE Studios in Dublin to participate in the Swipe T.V.
schools’ quiz programme today, Wednesday 4th February. We look forward to seeing them on
television when the programme is broadcast next month.

In January I reported three pupils to the Educational Welfare Service for absences in excess
of 20 days for this school year. I notified parents in writing that I had done so. I also wrote
to the parents of nine other pupils to inform them of their absences. The school attendance
for January was 93.2%.

Relationships and Sexuality Education lessons will be taught in all classes this month, as part
of the school’s S.P.H.E. programme (Social Personal and Health Education). Information in
relation to the content of the lessons will be forwarded shortly.
