SHAMROCKS FOR ZAMBIA - 2009

The boys in C.B.S. Primary School raised much-needed funds for the Christian Brothers’ Mission work in Zambia as part of their annual Lenten project. The boys sold around 1,250 pieces of shamrock and they raised €1,900 which will aid the work of Wexford Town man, Br. Bernard Hayes. This is the fourth year for the boys to help those who are less well-off than themselves.  “The lads did a fantastic job on raising so much money”, said school Principal, Jos Furlong. “Over the past number of years our pupils have raised around €8,000 for the work of Br. Hayes. A lot of this money has been used to set up a school in the village of Shimangalu. It’s a great that children in a school in Wexford can be responsible for bringing education to boys and girls in Zambia”.

Br. Bernard e-mailed the school last week to thank the pupils, staff and parents “for their kindness and generosity to the poor of Zambia”. He continued, “Since returning last month, I have been snowed under with genuine requests for help, mainly from young women with small children. On St. Patrick’s Day I was sheltering in the church doorway from a tropical storm when an extremely poor young woman, with an infant on her back and a two year old clutching her ragged skirt, begged me for the equivalent of 20 cent to buy two small buns from the parish bakery. I only had a 5,000 kwacha note (80 cent) in my pocket. I gave her what I had, but she needs much more help and your great generosity will be used to help her and many others also, more substantially. The ill-effects of the recession are a matter of life and death here”. As bad as the recession is in Ireland, we will hardly be describing it as a life and death situation. Well done to the C.B.S. Primary pupils for reaching out to those in need.

Tomás Hayes accepted the cheque on behalf of his brother, Bernard. “The money could not have come at a better time. Bernard really appreciates the support from the current pupils of the school and as a past pupil of C.B.S. he is very proud of them”.
