Primary Schools Enterprise Programme

On the 10th and 11th of May, the finals of the Primary Schools Enterprise Programme took place in the Ferrycarrig and the Riverside Park hotels. Two young business teams from CBS Primary were  competing in the Group 1 Final in the Ferrycarrig Hotel on the 10th. We feature them here and congratulate them on their excellent projects.

The Liquid Lunch Project

Ian Mitchell, Michael Doyle, Danny Cunningham and Eoin Taylor felt that the boys of CBS should be given a healthy alternative to the usual beverages consumed at lunchtime. They set up a 21st century 'Soup Kitchen' in the Art room and offered soup (four flavours to choose from) or hot chocolate on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the modest price of €1. The response has been terrific, and the sight of a queue at the Art Room door on every other day of the week has become the norm.

In May and June they will sell cooler drinks like frozen yogurts and milk shakes.

The boys have invested their own money in the project and are already reaping the financial rewards for their astuteness and hard work.

"We will share out some of the profits and the rest will go to charity", said a spokesperson.

Well done boys !!

Discount Card Scheme

These clever young men have initiated a Discount Card Scheme, where members can get discount of up to 10% by shopping in selected shops in the town.

The first step was the all important Market Research, where pupils were asked to name their favourite shops in town. Armed with these results and a covering letter from the Principal, the boys approached the shops in question and persauded the owners/managers to sign contracts - and the scheme was up and running. There are ten participating shops and they include sports shops, book shops, toy shops, fast food restaurants and even a barber's shop!!- something for everyone!

Membership Cards are sold at €5 each and are valid until December 31st, 2006. To date there are over 100 members in the scheme. When costs have been deducted, profits will be shared out, with some of the proceeds going to the Zambia Fund.

This enterprise earned the boys second place in the competition.

Congratulations boys!!!!

PS

Brothers Clement and Bernard called to the school recently and collected  a sizeable amount of money, which these boys donated from their profits.

"A pupil in school in Zambia could be educated for four months for the price of a bottle of Coke (€1.35)," Brother Clement told the boys in Room 9.

So, needless to say, the generous gift was much appreciated.

Bro. Clement accepts the donation
