TEXT- A -PARENT
We wish to update the contact numbers on our Text-a-Parent database.
It is a vital communication link and we have found it to be very
useful over the past couple of years. A text was sent today
informing parents that the boys had received the newsletter. If you
didn’t receive the text we don’t have an up-to-date contact number.
We need just one mobile number per family.
FUN RUN 2011
Our annual Fun Run will take place at 1.30 p.m. on Friday 7th
October. Pupils and staff will again dress up in Fancy Dress making
it a “FUN” day.
MILK
On Monday 5th September the boys received information in relation to
getting milk in school each day. The cost for this term is €12 or
€28 for the school year. We will be placing our order on Friday 9th
September.
PARENT/ TEACHER MEETINGS
This year we have decided to bring forward the Parent/Teacher
Meetings to just before the Halloween Mid-Term Break. The class
teachers will be in contact prior to the dates of the meetings –
Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th October.
PUPIL ACCIDENT INSURANCE
Parents have an opportunity again this year to take out Pupil
Accident Insurance, at a reasonable cost. There are two types of
cover:-
School Activities only, €5
School & Leisure Activities – 24 hours, €8
An insurance form accompanies this newsletter. Completed forms
(Cut-off section only) can be put in an envelope with the pupil’s
name, room no. and amount of money written on the outside. Forms
will be accepted up to and including Friday 23rd September.
ATTENDANCE
The beginning of a school year is a good time to take stock of your
son’s attendance. I cannot stress enough how important it is for him
to attend school as much as possible. I encourage all pupils and
families to make this September’s attendance figure even higher than
the 2010 figure for September - 97.03%.
PHOTOCOPYING & ART
Each year we ask for a contribution of €20 per pupil to assist with
the high cost of photocopying & art materials. Thanks to the many
families who have contributed already. We are still accepting
Photocopying and Art Materials.

day-grey trousers, light blue shirt, a crested jumper and black
shoes. I ask that you continue to make every effort to have your son
dressed in full uniform. If, for any reason, this is not possible on
a particular day please send a note to the class teacher or myself.
PARENTS’ COUNCIL CONTRIBUTION
You will be aware that all of the €30 contributions made to the
Parents’ Council will be used solely to assist with our school’s
Computer and I.T. costs. We greatly appreciate such donations from
parents.
Have a great year! Jos. Furlong, Principal, September 2011.

OCTOBER 2011 NEWSLETTER
FUN RUN 2011
We were blessed with beautiful sunshine for our annual FUN RUN on
Friday 7th October. It was a great success again. Thanks to the boys
and all the staff for dressing up. It was great to see so many
parents and other family members around the school on the day.
The following rooms won prizes in the best dressed classes
competition:-
Room 10-5th/6thclass-Ms. Coady-€50
Room 11-6th class-Mr. Cummings-€40
Room 17-5th class-Ms. Hodnett-€30

The boys have been asked to return all cards and money by Tuesday
next, 18th October. The best collector in each class and the best
collecting classes will receive their prizes on that day. If your
son still has to return his card and/or money we would appreciate it
if you could encourage him to do so in the next few days. All FUN
RUN cards need to be returned, including those without sponsorship
names.
PARENT/TEACHER
MEETINGS
The Parent/Teacher Meetings will take place this month, Tuesday 25th
and Wednesday 26th October. You will receive an appointment time
next week. If you have a preference for a particular day or time you
can let the teacher know before the letters are sent out. In line
with the Department of Education and Skills guidelines, the school
will close at 2.35 p.m. on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th October.
We believe that the Parent/Teacher Meetings are very worthwhile and
I ask that you make every effort to attend.
SCHOOL CLOSURES
• Thursday 27th October-school in use as polling station.
• Monday 31st October-Friday 4th November-Mid-Term Break.
GREEN SCHOOL
• The school won a Merit Award in the Wexford in Bloom competition.
We received a framed certificate and a “hamper” of seeds and bulbs
for planting in the school grounds.
• We are continuing to recycle mobile phones, batteries and computer
ink cartridges and will be glad to accept them in the school.
• A new initiative is the promotion of used newspaper recycling. By
participating the boys can win prizes such as an xbox, i-pod,
digital camera and Tesco vouchers. The draw will take place on
December 9th. It’s easy to take part:
1. Tie a bundle of 8 newspapers together.
2. Put pupil’s name, class and school on an A4 sheet of paper and
attach it to the front of the bundle before it’s tied.
3. Bring the newspapers to the collection point in the Tesco car
park.

ATTENDANCE
The attendance figure for September was 95.5%. There was a higher
than usual level of illness last month which meant that we didn’t
manage to reach the September 2010 figure, 97.03%. So far in October
the attendance is 95.6%. As ever I encourage you to have your son
attend school as much as possible.
ENROLMENT IN SECOND LEVEL

I would like to remind you again about enrolling your son in the
second level school of your choice. There are three second level

FUN RUN 2011
The final figure for the Fun Run is
€6181. This is a fantastic amount of money to collect in one school
fund-raising activity. Thank you very much for your support. Well
done again to the boys for making this such a successful
fund-raiser.
PARENT/TEACHER MEETINGS
The attendance at last month’s
parent/teacher meetings was very good. To date 95% of parents have
met with their son’s class teacher. If you have yet to have a
meeting with the teacher you can write a note in the homework
journal or phone the secretary to fix a suitable time.
BOARD OF MANAGEMENT
The members of the Board of Management
manage the school on behalf of the Patron, Bishop Denis Brennan and
they are accountable to the Patron and the Minister for Education
and Skills, Mr. Ruairí Quinn. Boards of Management in Primary
Schools are appointed for a four year term. The term of office for
new Board of Management is from 1st December 2011 to 30th November
2015.
The Board consists of eight people – two Patron’s nominees, the
Principal, one other member of the teaching staff, two elected
parents-one mother and one father and two people from the wider
community.
A meeting, to elect the two parent nominees, will be held on
Wednesday 23rd November at 8 p.m. All parents are welcome to attend
the meeting. Nominations will be sought from those present, for
persons to stand for election as parent nominees on the Board. If
there is more than one mother and one father nominated a secret
ballot will be held at the meeting.
DECEMBER 8th
School will be open on Thursday
December 8th. It is a Holy Day and mass will be celebrated in Bride
Street Church for Staff, Pupils and their families. You will be very
welcome to join us.
CHRISTMAS SHOE BOX APPEAL
We have been involved in this project
for a number of years. It is a good opportunity for the boys to help
other, less well-off, children in foreign countries. Leaflets were
distributed today. We will be delighted to accept filled shoeboxes
up until Friday 18th November.
PUPIL ATTENDANCE
The attendance for October was 95.7%
which was very similar to the September figure.
FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS
Parents are continuing to make
contributions to the school - €20 to assist with Art & Photocopying
costs and €30 to the Parents’ Council to support the school’s I.T.
expenses. If you need to check if you have made these contributions
you can give Mary Goodison, our school secretary, a quick phone
call.
MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
In last month’s newsletter I indicated
that we are interested in sending the newsletter by
e-mail. If you feel that you would like to share any opinions that
you have about this you could send an e-mail to
principal@cbsprimarywexford.com . You could also send in the more
traditional “note”. To gauge the level of interest in receiving the
newsletter by e-mail there is space provided on this sheet to record
your e-mail address. If you require the newsletter to be sent to two
different e-mail addresses please fill out both spaces. The December
newsletter will have an update. Families who don’t have access to
e-mail or who would like to continue to receive a paper version of
the newsletter will still get it in the normal way.
I would like to receive the monthly newsletter by e-mail.

being willing to serve on the Board and I wish them well in their
very important role of managing the school over the next four years.
The eight members of the Board of Management of C.B.S. Primary
School are:-
Patron’s Nominees:
Chairperson- Fr. Aodhán Marken, Liz Murphy

School will be open on Thursday 8th December. It is
the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and mass will be celebrated
for the pupils, staff and families at 11.30 a.m. in Bride Street
Church. Everybody will be very welcome to attend.
SHOEBOX APPEAL
The boys brought 63 shoeboxes into the school. The shoebox
gifts are currently on their way to Armenia where all the Co.
Wexford Shoeboxes will brighten the lives of 7,290 boys and girls.
Thank you, again, for your support. If you would like to get
an idea of the impact of a gift of a shoebox check out “Journey of a
Shoebox in Three Minutes” on You Tube.
CHRISTMAS FAIR-C.B.S. GYM
The Transition year students and their teachers are organising a
Christmas Fair which will be held between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on
Friday of this week, 9th December. The students
will be selling all sorts of products from their mini companies,
which could make ideal Christmas gifts! There will be free
face-painting, Carol singers, a Christmas Colouring Activity and
Storytelling. Our younger boys might like to visit Santa’s
Grotto and receive a present from Santa Claus.
ATTENDANCE
November’s attendance was 95.3%, which is in line with the previous
two months in this school year – September 95.4% and October 95.7%.
I encourage all pupils and their families to work at maintaining
this high level of attendance during December. I would hope
that there will be an improvement on the December figure from the
last three years – 2008 – 90.7%, 2009-92.8%, 2010-91.3%.
HAND HELD ELECTRONIC GAMES
We
have always been willing to allow boys to bring hand-held electronic
games such as P.S.P. and Nintendo D.S. to school. I would like
to remind you that the school cannot accept any responsibility for
damage or loss. The boys will be fully responsible. As
parents, I would ask you to be aware of material which is being
brought to school. I firmly believe that children should play games
or watch videos that are age appropriate. There is no place in
a primary school for material rated over 18 or over 16. I ask
for your assistance in ensuring that your son only brings age
appropriate material to school. If inappropriate material is
found, the device and game will be confiscated. Parents will
be notified in writing and asked to call to the school to collect
the items.
NEWSLETTER BY E-MAIL
To
date 39 families have indicated that they would like to receive the
newsletter by e-mail. We plan to begin sending the newsletter
electronically from January 2012. There is still time to
submit your e-mail address.

SCHOOL CLOSURES
Thursday 22nd December will be the final day of the term.
School will close at 12.45 p.m. School will re-open on Monday
9th
January 2012.
PARENTS’ COUNCIL 2011/2012
The members of our Parents’ Council support the school in many ways.
They are also a tangible link between the general body of
Parents/Guardians and the school. Being a member takes
enthusiasm and commitment, but demands little of your time.
Involvement allows you the opportunity to share your ideas, express
your thoughts and keeps you informed of any changes or situations in
the managing of the school. The occasions that require time
and assistance throughout the year are:
Occasional meetings
Fun Run (Oct)
Holy Communion (May)
Sports Day/B.B.Q. (June)
Book covering for rental scheme (June)
If
you are willing to put your name forward to serve as a member of the
Parents’ Council, please sign below and return to the school during
December.

CAROL SERVICE
We
plan to hold a Carol Service in Bride Street Church at 11.30 a.m. on
Thursday 22nd December. We’d love to see as many
family members as possible. That day will also be our
traditional “Santa Hat Day” when pupils and staff are encouraged to
get into the Christmas Spirit. 40 boys will go home with
selection boxes courtesy of a free raffle co-ordinated by the
Parents’ Council. Make sure that you’re in school that day,
boys!
On behalf of
the Staff and Board of Management of C.B.S. Primary School I wish
you a Happy Christmas and a very enjoyable holiday time.
