PHOTOGRAPHER
The photographer will visit the school on Tuesday next, April 8th. I ask that you ensure that your son wears his full uniform on that day. This applies even if he is not having an individual photo taken. The photographer will be taking class group photos for the school archives.
Consent forms were distributed earlier this week. Please indicate clearly whether or not you would like your son to have his photograph taken and return the form on or before Tuesday 8th April. A reminder that the photos will be on a sale or return basis i.e. if you don’t wish to purchase you don’t have to.

SHAMROCK
Just before the Easter Holidays the boys sold shamrock to aid the work of Br. Bernard Hayes and his fellow Brothers in Zambia, €1,500 was raised for this great work. The money raised from the sale of shamrock over the past few years has been used to build a basic school in Shimangalu in Zambia. The school already has 600 pupils, so many in fact that there are two teaching sessions each day. Half of the pupils attend in the morning with the other 300 attending in the afternoon. Br. Bernard visited our school on the day of the Easter holidays and he presented the Positive Discipline certificates for good behaviour.

 JUNE '08 Newsletter

Tomás O’Concubhair
On Monday 30th June Mr. O’Connor will retire having taught in C.B.S. Primary School for the past 46 years. In the long history of Christian Brother Schools in Wexford I’m not aware of any other teacher giving so many years service to the school. Mr. O’Connor has shown tremendous commitment and loyalty to C.B.S. and we thank God for those years of dedicated service.
Born near the village of Cloghane on the Dingle Peninsula in Co. Kerry, Mr. O’Connor trained as a teacher in St. Patrick’s College in Dublin before being appointed to the school in 1962. He brought with him a great love for Irish language and culture which he passed on to “The Boys of Wexford” for over four decades. In those early days in Wexford Mr. O’Connor, or “Tom” as he was better known, played football with the Sarsfields and rugby with Wexford Wanderers. He has continued to keep himself fit and healthy over the years through hill-walking and cycling. He still cycles to and from school most days. Following his cycling accident during this school year Mr. O’Connor missed a number of days. I recall saying to him that I couldn’t remember him missing time through illness before that. He said that the last time that he was sick was when he was in St. Pats training to be a teacher!
In his time in the school Mr. O’Connor has witnessed many changes – no electricity in the early days, over 50 pupils in classrooms, all male teaching staff, teaching in the C.B.S. school in George’s Street, the New Curriculum in 1971, 880 pupils in the school in the 1980’s, a new school building, the Revised Curriculum in 1999. He has taken it all in his stride and continued to do what he does best, teach.
During my years here I have met many past pupils who enquire about the school. Invariably I am asked “How is Tom?” or “Is Tom still there?” He is held in very high esteem and has been a constant presence in C.B.S. Primary. It won’t be the same when we start the next school year. For the first time in 46 years Tom won’t be here. Every person is unique. However, the Irish phrase “Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann” (We won’t see his like again) truly does apply to Tomás O’Concubhair. On behalf of the whole school community we wish Tomás happiness, fulfilment and God’s blessing on himself and his family in his retirement. Go raibh míle maith agat, a Thomáis.

STANDARDISED TEST RESULTS
A reminder that the test results will be available from Wednesday 11th June. I encourage you to request the results from your son’s teacher.

LISBON TREATY REFERENDUM
We received notification that the school will be used for voting in the forthcoming referendum. The school will be closed on Thursday 12th June.

STAFF MEETING
The final staff meeting will take place on Thursday 19th June. Meetings are usually held on the last Thursday of the month. June’s meeting will be held a week earlier because of the proximity of the end of the school year. School will close at 1.50 p.m. on Thursday 19th June.

B.B.Q. DAYS
The Junior B.B.Q. Day will be held on Friday 20th June.
The Senior B.B.Q. Day will be held on Monday 23rd June.
The activities on both days will commence at 10.00 a.m. The B.B.Q. food will be served during the regular lunch time, from 12.45 p.m. We would love to see as many parents as possible attending. We will be cooking extra food so you can have your lunch here too!

SECOND-HAND BOOK SALE
The second-hand book sale will be held on Wednesday 25th June in the Art Room. The boys will receive their 2008/2009 book list during the previous week. There will be a slot from 9.30 to 10.30 for parents only. The boys will be given time slots during the day. Parents can call in at anytime between 9.30 and 12.30.
If your son’s books are unsold at the end of the book sale I would ask you to consider donating them to the school. We assist some families each year by giving a loan of books. We will also be giving consideration to setting up a Book Rental scheme for the 2009/2010 school year. Receiving donations of books would be of great assistance.

SCHOOL CLOSURES 2008/2009
The decision regarding the school closures for the 2008/2009 school year will be made at the Board of Management meeting which is due to take place on 10th June. The boys will receive a copy of the closures on the following day, Wednesday 11th June.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
In last month’s newsletter I informed parents of the changes in relation to the school uniform for the coming school year. The school jumper will be available with the crest stitched directly onto it. Two shops, Shaws and Hores Stores, will sell the jumper. Shaws will stock their own brand which is 100% acrylic. Hores Stores will have the Vivaldi jumper which is a 50% wool and 50% acrylic mix. The second change relates to footwear. From the beginning of the next school year black shoes only must be worn with the uniform.

SCHOOL HURLING PANEL
The boys on the school hurling panel have reached the county semi-final of the Rackard League Division 2. We wish the boys and their trainers, Ms. Mary Coady and Br. Éamonn Kinsella well in today’s game against Monageer.

SHREDDED PAPER
We have shredded paper available which would be of use as animal bedding. If you would like some or know of anybody who would find it of use, please contact Mary in the office.
